Bengaluru is hosting the seventh edition of India International Coffee Festival (IICF). It is being held from January 16 to 19 in the IT hub. India Coffee Trust in association with Coffee Board announced the plan. Karnataka Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda inaugurated the festival which was also attended by stakeholders of the coffee industry from across the country and overseas. Policy makers, manufacturers, exporters and traders are also participating with the festival also referring to the challenges faced by people in the coffee business.

According to a PTI report, Coffee Board secretary Srivatsa Krishna said that they want to make India a coffee nation and position it as the drink for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of New India. He said, “Chai (Tea) has been the drink for many many years and British gave the tea for free at the street corners and made this country a tea drinking country. We want to make it a coffee nation. Today outside the southern world and the national capital and a few other state capital, nobody drinks coffee.”
Krishna said that the board wants to make Indian coffee as famed as the Darjeeling or Shillong tea. He said the Board was the first organisation was the first to introduce the blockchain technology into coffee in a pilot project through Eca Analytics in India. The project intends to bring together growers, curers, roaster and exporters together. In a bid to help coffee growers, Eca Analytics would help the board utilize 100 years of rainfall and soil data. They have also partnered with Harvard University to experiment with ‘precision agriculture development’.

A mobile application developed by the Coffee Board for growers and exporters was also demonstrated during the occasion. It will be formally launched two months later by the Union Commerce Minister. Coffee Board of India secretary Srivatsa Krishna said that India would host the International Coffee Organisation’s World Conference for the first time in 2020.
