The Pirates of Pewamo-Westphalia top Saranac 50-14 in girls basketball.
SARANAC – The undefeated Pirates of Pewamo-Westphalia took on the Saranac Redskins in a CMAC game, Tuesday, Jan. 16. The Pirates were coming off a fresh 53-19 victory over Laingsburg and were able to top Saranac 50-14 to continue their winning streak.
The Pirates led after the first quarter 17-5 and never looked back. They were leading by a score of 31-8 heading into the locker room at the half.
“P-W plays tenacious defense holding us to 3 of 34 from the floor,” said Saranac coach Steve Tompkins. “They also execute on the offensive end very well. They are very athletic and we had a difficult time with their press. I was proud of our girls, even though the score was lopsided, we continued to play hard and didn't hang our heads. Our defensive effort was good tonight, hopefully we can continue this effort for the rest of the season.”
Emily Spitzley was leading scorer for the Pirates with 18 points, and Ellie Droste tallied 11.
“It's a tough place to play at Saranac,” shared P-W Steve Eklund. “Coach Tompkins' teams always bring the fight to you on their court. We are pleased to earn the road win and happy with the defensive effort. I thought we lacked energy at times and seemed a bit out of sorts, offensively. But, we executed our defensive game plan and that’s always the key to our success.”
Saranac will be playing host to Laingsburg for a conference match up, Thursday, Jan. 18. The Pirates will be hosting Fowler on the same night. Both games are scheduled to begin at approximately 7 p.m.
