DJI Mavic Air cleared for takeoff? Mysterious trailer teases January launch event

DJI has sent out invitations to an event it’s holding in New York on January 23. The summons itself doesn’t reveal anything about what it’s preparing to showcase, but an accompanying trailer hints at a new drone like the rumoured DJI Mavic Air.
Drone DJ recently uncovered references to a mysterious Mavic Air, which it believes to be a small and fast drone designed to bridge the gap between the DJI Spark and DJI Mavic Pro, on the firm’s website – so there’s a chance that’s what will be on display.
That assumption is seemingly corroborated by a reference in the 43-second teaser trailer, wherein the narrator – in a mystifying Carl Sagan-like voice – says, “..from seemingly insignificant size comes formidable strength and power.”
It’s all very speculative, however, and our resident drone expert Richard Easton reckons an upgraded DJI Phantom could equally be on the cards.

That said, the rumoured Mavic Air makes a lot of sense. It would provide an option for those looking for something a little more powerful than the £449 ($399) Spark, but aren’t willing to shell out the £1099 ($899) DJI commands for the Mavic Pro, which won Drone of the Year at the Trusted Reviews Awards 2017.
