The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion has developed Healthy People, a set of goals created every 10 years, which identifies our nation’s health improvement priorities by establishing evidence based national health objectives.

One of the 26 health indicators is nutrition, physical activity and obesity. The Eat Healthy Be Active Community Workshops is one of the tools that has been created by HHS. Here are some startling facts — 1 in 3 adults (34 percent) and 1 in 6 children and adolescents (16.2 percent) are obese.

Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, which are among the leading causes of death.

The community series workshops were offered two years ago and was well received thus the reason to bring them back beginning on Feb. 2, (and continuing for 6 weeks) 9, 16, 23, March 2 and 9 at 11:30 a.m. in the upstairs BPL meeting room.

Workshop titles are as follows:

Enjoy Healthy Food that Tastes Great—emphasis is on reducing fat and salt in recipes and using more herbs.

Quick, Healthy Meals and Snacks— prepare meals quickly and choose healthier foods when eating out.

Eating Healthy on a Budget— learn how to plan, purchase and prepare meals/snacks on a budget.

Tips for Losing Weight and Keeping It Off—determine a healthy weight, how many calories are needed and how to eat healthy.

Making Healthy Eating Part of Your Total Lifestyle—what is a healthy lifestyle and learn which foods to eat regularly and those occasionally. Learn how to read a Nutrition Facts Label.

Physical Activity is Key to Living Well—learn the benefits of physical activity (PA), strength-training activities and develop/maintain a plan.
