And the winner is... New York Times: Donald Trump proudly declares the winners of 2017 Fake News Awards
US President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday night to announce the winners of his self-proclaimed 'Fake News' awards given out for most dishonest and biased reporting in 2017, in Trump's own opinion.

President Trump metaphorically opened the envelopes and declared the names of the lucky winners on Twitter. The complete list published on the site GOP.com, also mentions that 2017 had been a year of unrelenting bias, unfair news coverage and even downright fake news. The prelude to the list of winners further goes on to say that "studies have shown that 90% of the media coverage of President Trump is negative".

The New York Times' Paul Krugman stood in the first place for his prediction that the stock markets would never recover if Trump is elected. Well, that doesn't actually classify as fake news as it was an opinion coming from a columnist and not a news reporter. However, ironically, the Dow Jones industrial average closed above 26,000 points for the first time on Wednesday. Perhaps the expression "Better lucky than smart" hasn't yet lost its relevance, particularly in Donald Trump's case.

Featuring at number two is ABC News' Brian Ross, who had made a big error in December by misreporting that Trump had asked the erstwhile National Security Advisor Micheal Flynn to make contact with Russian officials during the 2016 election campaign. As it turned out, Trump had asked Flynn to get in touch with Russia after the election. However, ABC News issued a correction and put Ross on leave.

At third position stood CNN, for falsely reporting that Donald Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr had access to "hacked documents" from Wikileaks. Interestingly, CNN also features in the list of Trump's Fake News awardees at number 6, 7 and 9 for its other news stories which didn't go down well with the Trump administration, including a CNN video suggesting that the President had overfed fish during his Japan visit. The left-leaning news network CNN turned out as the clear winner by making it to the list four times.

A report by TIME magazine that Trump had ordered removal of a bust of Martin Luther King Jr from the Oval Office finished at number four on the list.

Comfortably placed at number five is The Washington Post's Dave Weigel for tweeting that Trump's massive sold-out rally in Pensacola, Florida, wasn't packed with supporters, backing his claim by including a picture showing an empty arena. In his response, Donald Trump had asked WaPo to retract the tweet and apologize.

At number eight is a Newsweek report claiming that the Polish First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda had refused to shake hands with Trump. Showing guts and countering sarcasm with sarcasm, Newsweek sent out a tweet on Wednesday evening acknowledging the award.

The New York Times again features in the list at number ten for its front page report claiming that Trump administration had hidden a crucial climate report. The New York Times was later reprimanded for its major screw-up on the climate change story.

Finally, while concluding the list, Trump, in his own words said, "And last, but not the least: "RUSSIA COLLUSION!" Russian collusion is perhaps the greatest hoax perpetrated on the American people. THERE IS NO COLLUSION!"

In conclusion, these awards are nothing but a list of complaints by Trump against the media, hurled at them with sufficient dose of cynicism under the garb of Fake News Awards.

As far as the media is concerned, though, misreporting never reflects well on a media person or network, but at the end of the day, we are all humans. These isolated cases of false reporting are just a drop in the ocean and cannot undermine all the good work that media constantly puts in to bring out the truth. And, as they say, to err is human, to forgive is divine. Perhaps, President Trump should take a leaf out of someone's book.
