Glencoe moves into ASWA rankings; Southside jumps up 2 spots

The Glencoe girls basketball moved into the rankings for the first time this season as voted on by the Alabama Sports Writers Association released Wednesday night.

The Yellow Jackets (14-5) are No. 9 in Class 3A, which comes after their 40-33 win over Hokes Bluff last week.

The Eagles (15-5) dropped one spot to No. 7 in 4A. The two could meet again Friday in the semifinals of the Etowah County tournament at Hokes Bluff if Glencoe defeats West End in the first round at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Southside (15-1) jumped up two spots to No. 5 in 6A. The Panthers have been idle since Jan. 9. Southside gets back to action at 7:45 Thursday in the semifinals of the county tournament against Sardis.

No county teams are ranked on the boys side after Westbrook Christian dropped out from the 10 spot in 2A.

The Warriors (11-7) went 1-1 since the last set of rankings was released last week. Westbrook beat Gaston 69-33 then fell to area foe Collinsville 42-41.

The Panthers claimed the area with the win and now sit at No. 10 in the rankings.

Coosa Christian girls are in the others nominated category in 1A.

Etowah (5A) and Hokes Bluff (4A) join Westbrook in boys teams in the others nominated category.

Other area girls teams ranked were Cherokee County (No. 9 in 4A), Plainview (No. 7 in 3A), Collinsville (No. 2 in 2A) and Fyffe (No. 4 in 2A). Plainview (No. 1 in 3A) was the only other area team ranked joining Collinsville.

The Eagles (15-5) dropped one spot to No. 7 in 4A. The two could meet again Friday in the semifinals of the Etowah County tournament at Hokes Bluff if Glencoe defeats West End in the first round at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
