Charming schoolchildren line up for Kate Middleton handshake... but hug royal instead

THIS is the adorable moment a group of school line up to shake Kate Middleton’s hand – but instead go in for a hug with the Duchess of Cambridge.

The Duchess of Cambridge was visiting Bond Primary School in Mitcham, south west London, on Wednesday afternoon, to see the work of the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative in action.

Just before she was set to leave, the children formed an orderly queue, lining up to bid farewell to the royal.

As pregnant Kate leaned down to shake the hands with the first youngster, but instead of a handshake the Duchess of Cambridge instead received a huge bear hug.

With cameras capturing the adorable moment, Kate happily obliged the chid’s embrace, before her classmates followed suit.

The Duchess of Cambridge offered a beaming smile as the children one-by-one reached out to hug the royal.

Prior to her visit to the primary school, Kate visited Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she was spotted without her engagement ring – owing to the children’s hospital’s minimum jewellery policy.

Kate listened to young patients and their families to hear about their experiences of the enhanced facilities in the completed Mittal Children’s Medical Centre.

The centre has transformed the hospital's inpatient facilities and fulfils its goal of providing modern accommodation for all the young patients, and allowing parents or carers to stay comfortably by their bedside.

During the visit, Kate also met staff caring for young patients and talk to clinicians carrying out cutting-edge research to help the most seriously ill children.

The Duchess of Cambridge cheered up four-year-old patient Rafael Chana, who is awaiting a heart transplant, exchanging smiles and high fives while Kate was at his bedside.

As they spoke, Rafael told Kate about his love for olives. She replied: “I love olives. Are they your favourite? What do you prefer, olives or sweeties?”

The four-year-old answered with olives and Kate said: “Olives over sweeties – amazing. I used to eat lots and lots of olives when I was little. They’re very good for you.

“What other things do you like eating? Do you like Pasta? Charlotte likes pasta too – with olives. Do you like pasta with olives?”

Rafael said: “I like olive nachos.”
