Randolph robbery, police chase end in crash

RANDOLPH - A multi-town police chase involving an armed robber ended with the robber dead in a head-on crash on Union Street (Route 139) Wednesday afternoon that sent another driver to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The unidentified robber, armed with a sawed-off shotgun walked into the Super Mart on North Main Street at about 3 p.m. Wednesday and demanded money from the clerk, police said. The robber fired a shot into the floor. The store clerk was the only other person in the store and was uninjured, police said in a statement.

The robber escaped by car with an undisclosed amount of cash. Randolph police broadcast a description of the robber and the car, a blue 2009 Pontiac G6, sedan. Shortly afterward, Holbrook police located a car and driver matching the description and  tried to stop the car.

The driver took off, leading police on a pursuit from Holbook, and eventually back to Randolph. The pursuit ended when the driver crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into another car near 306 Union St.

The suspect, identified only as a 37-year-old man from Holbrook who was known to police,  later died of his injuries at an area hospital. The male driver of the other car was taken to a hospital with injuries police said are non-life threatening.

This is a developing story.
