WINFIELD — Bethel College freshman Abby Schmidt put together one of the top single-game performances in school history for a freshman, leading the Threshers to a 51-47 win over Southwestern Wednesday night in KCAC play in Winfield.
Schmidt scored 28 points with 19 rebounds. Schmidt was three rebounds shy of the school record. Schmidt hit 10 of 14 from the line.
Bethel trailed by as many as nine in the first quarter, but cut the deficit to four at the end of the period, 13-9. Down by six in the second quarter, the Threshers rallied to tie the game on a Kelsey Potter shot at the buzzer, 21-21.
Bethel trailed by as many as seven late in the third quarter. A Ciara McKinney shot on a feed from Jade Brown with five seconds left in the period put Bethel within three 38-35.
Schmidt hit two free throws with 6:26 left in regulation to give the Threshers its first lead of the game, 39-38. Fantasia Johnson tied the game with a pair of free throws with 46 seconds to play. A Brown steal led to a Schmidt basket with 19 seconds to play. Schmidt was fouled on the play and hit the free throw. After a Southwestern missed 3-point shot, Brown hit one of two free throws with one second to play.
Both teams finished the game 29.6 percent from the field at 16 of 54. Bethel was outscored 15-0 from 3-point range, but hit 19 of 32 free throws, while Southwestern was 10 of 11.
Bethel held a 56-28 rebounding edge.
Jordyn Miller led Southwestern with 20 points and seven rebounds. Jazmyne Laskey added 10 points.

Southwestern falls to 4-17, 3-10 in KCAC play. Bethel improves to 7-14, 3-10 in KCAC play. Bethel plays KCAC leader Friends at 5 p.m. Saturday in Wichita. Friends beat Bethel 66-56 in the first meeting between the two teams. Friends is 13-7, 11-2 in KCAC play, coming off a 78-75 road win at Oklahoma Wesleyan and on a four-game winning streak.
