WHARTON — Donald E. Plotts, age 92, of Wharton, died on January 11, 2018 in Fairhaven Community. He was born on June 21, 1925 in Wharton to J. Ray and Bernice (England) Plotts. He married Ann J. Kear on July 12, 1948, and she preceded him in death due to breast cancer on September 5, 1985.
Mr. Plotts is survived by daughter Peggy A. (Richard) Pfeiffer, Wharton; son Matthew R. (Lori) Plotts, Tiffin; grandchildren Brittany A. (Drew) Roach, Forest, Brandon R. (Char) Pfeiffer, St. Louis, MO, Jessica (Doug) Hartman, Lyndhurst, Arianna Plotts, Las Vegas, NV, Alex (Andi) Plotts, Tiffin, Dustin Plotts, Colorado Springs, CO, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Dottie Plotts; and a dear friend of many years Virginia Schmidt. He was preceded in death by a sister Evelyn Bash, brother Mark Plotts, and his beloved seeing eye dog Debbie.
Mr. Plotts graduated salutatorian in 1943 from Wharton High School. He was the center for the Wharton “Whiz Kids” basketball team that went to regional finals in 1942. Donald was a World War II Navy Veteran serving as an electrician on the USS Ulysses. He was a farmer and pilot. Mr. Plotts was a Richland township trustee for 25 years. He was a HAM radio operator with the call letters W8MF. Don became blind on Nov. 15, 1956 due to a hunting accident. He was a member of Findlay Radio Club, Seneca County Radio Club, American Legion, IOOF, Riverdale Athletic Booster, Wharton United Methodist Church, Wharton Church of God, North Salem Lutheran Church, Richland Grange and Salem Grange. Don and Ann served as State Grange deputies in the 1950’s. For hobbies he enjoyed playing the harmonica, talking on his HAM radio, wintering in Florida, fishing in Canada and listening to OSU basketball games.
