Chennai: Megastar Kamal Hassan, who on Tuesday announced he will float a political party on February, trailed the other megastar, Rajnikanth, in a new poll released on Wednesday, but opposition DMK leader MK Stalin was seen at the top of the table.
An India Today-Karvy Insights survey said over half of those surveyed see Stalin as the most capable to be chief minister, while 17 per cent picked Rajani. “More than half of the respondents weren’t convinced about his ability to fill what they call is a political vacuum in the state after Jayalalithaa’s death,” the survey said.
Kamal stayed behind with 4 per cent, even as ruling Anna DMK leaders were nowhere to be seen.
The survey said some 20 per cent voters would shift to Rajnikanth’s party, which means the ADMK could be swept off power. The DMK would still remain in the opposition as 14 per cent of its voters could be lost to Rajni.
Bulk of the voters said their key concerns are corruption, price rise and unemployment.
Kamal Hassan has announced his party will be launched on Feb.21 in hometown Ramanathapuram, from where he will start his tour of the state. He said his political agenda will also be released on the same day.
“I have immense gratitude to the people of Tamil Nadu who have given me everything! However, “gratitude” by itself is not adequate, and the love and affection I have for them needs to be manifested in action & in deed,” he tweeted past midnight Tuesday.
Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, meanwhile, asserted that the ADMK in no way will be affected if Kamal Haasan or rebel ADMK leader TTV Dinakaran floated their own parties.
At the centenary celebrations of ADMK founder and former chief minister MG Ramachandran’s birth anniversary, they said: “No party or alliance will have any impact on the ADMK.” Dinakaran, who leaders the ADMK-Amma party, said on Tuesday he will float a new party if necessary.
Palaniswami said the valedictory of MGR centenary will be celebrated in a grand manner in the city when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is available.
He demanded the Central government should rethink about cancelling the Hajj subsidy. All necessary action will be taken to ensure the safety of Tamil students studying outside the state, he promised.
