The Black Women’s Leadership Alliance is hosting a DreamWeek event that underscores their mission to strengthen leadership among professional black women.

President Della Guidry said their goal is to foster the ability to network with like-minded women and come together as a collective group. She said the alliance was founded after a group of executive-level women saw a void in opportunities to network and mentor one another.

Guidry said the alliance is available as a source of information, a sounding board to offer a platform for people to discuss issues they can feel comfortable about discussing in a safe environment.

“The ultimate goal is to make these women available to serve the community and be on board so they can be at the decision-making process,” she said, “as well as serve the community and each other in a sisterhood.”

To that end, the group will host “Living the Dream, an evening with Valorie Burton,” Thursday night at the Jo Long Theatre at The Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry.

Burton is author of 11 books about personal development and founder of The Coaching and Positive Psychology Institute. She has appeared on radio and television shows that include “The Dr. Oz Show” on WOAI-TV, “Today” on NBC and various shows on CNN.

The alliance launched in March and held its first meeting at the Little Carver Theatre. Currently, there are 18 members. The organization meets monthly and has quarterly programs, such as the leadership panel they hosted in June for women at local universities to address their challenges and concerns.

Guidry said the alliance’s first meeting was an overwhelming experience.

“The response was wonderful. It was exciting to see the buzz in the room,” she said. “We had millennials and executives. It was just an exciting air in the room.”

The alliance’s second vice president, Pershama Dailey, said they also want to help women make bold moves in their professional and personal lives.

“We want to be able to make sure that they’re well established,” she said, “and then determine how we can help them go to the next level in their career or within their business. We provide that space so that we can have those conversations and address those issues.”
