The city of Pearland issued a boil water notice Wednesday evening after a major water plant failure.

According to the city's Twitter page, residents west of Texas 288 are urged to boil their water before using it, including for drinking, washing hands and showering. About two hours before the boil water notice was posted, the city tweeted that residents in the Shadow Creek subdivision were experiencing low water pressure.

The city said there was a "major equipment failure" at the Kirby Water Production facility, prompting the notice. According to Cindy Schroedter with Pearland's public works department said three pumps at the facility went down, and the boil water notice is strictly precautionary.

She said nothing has contaminated the water.
