WRESTLING
Laney 51, Ashley 18
The Buccaneers won 10 of 14 bouts, including seven in a row from 106 pounds through 145, to finish out their Mideastern Conference slate with a victory.
Khalil Tucker got things started with a first period pin at 160 before Ashley captured two victories in a row to take a 9-6 lead. Pins from Johnathan White (195) and Cael Willis (220) put Laney back in front for good.
Evan Kite (113) and Marcus Mondragon (138) also registered pins for the Buccaneers. Ashley got pins from Jon Luke Horne at 152 and Josh Stewart at 170.
West Brunswick 57, New Hanover 16
Julian LeGrande (132 pounds), Shane Smith (145), Jeremiah Daily (152), Lincoln Smith (170), Jacary Bethel (182) and Roberto Colon (220) all registered pins to keep the Trojans unbeaten in the Mideastern Conference.
Only two matches went the distance, with each team winning one. West Brunswick's Matthew Smith earned a 5-0 decision over Matteo Meehan at 113, while the Wildcats got a 10-0 major decision from Jake Cuba at 138.
The Trojans will now turn their attention to Wednesday's home match against North Brunswick that will be for the Mideastern Conference title. Both teams are currently 6-0 in the league.
BOYS BASKETBALL
South Brunswick 49, West Brunswick 44
Jace McKenney, the area's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 17 points and Kareem Randolph added 14 to guide the Cougars to a key win.
South Brunswick (11-5, 4-3 Mideastern) now holds a two-game lead on the Trojans (9-8, 2-5) for the league's second automatic 3A playoff berth. The Cougars also remained one game behind Ashley and Hoggard for second place in the conference.
A 16-point third quarter helped South Brunswick extend its lead to 40-31.
Khalil Bland scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second half for West Brunswick.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
West Brunswick 52, South Brunswick 12
The Trojans got contributions from 11 players en route to a comfortable victory.
Natyra Gore led all scorers with 15 points, while Dyna Jeffries chipped in seven points. Breanna Mercer finished with six for West Brunswick (11-6, 4-3 Mideastern), which led 16-6 after one quarter and 30-9 at halftime.'
South Brunswick fell to 0-13 overall and 0-7 in the league.
