Use of ATM card in Calangute leads to arrest

The Calangute police on Wednesday arrested three men who had been on the run after shooting at police personnel during a nakabandi in Delhi last week.

Inspector Jivba Dalvi, in charge of Calangute police station, said he had received information from the Delhi Police that the three men — Vipin Sunil Dagar (24) and Praveen Surjay Dagar (23) of Jharoda Kalan, New Delhi, and Ajay Kumar Ahlawat (22) of Barhana, Jhajjar, Haryana — have committed a serious offence in Delhi and were in Calangute. The Delhi Police had shared their photographs as well.

According to the police, on January 11, the three men were travelling in a car to Delhi airport, when they were stopped at a police checkpoint. They fired at the police personnel, dashed the vehicle of a police constable, and sped away. They abandoned the car and left for Goa the same day.

An FIR was registered against them under the Arms Act, 1959, and Sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code at the Delhi Cantonment police station.

Shopping centre arrest

Superintendent of Police, North Goa, Chandan Chaudhary said that one of the accused swiped his ATM card at a hotel and shopping centre in Calangute. Mr. Dalvi and his team reached the shopping centre and arrested one of the accused, who had come there to buy drinks.

On being interrogated, he took the police to the restaurant where the other two were having dinner with friends from Delhi. Mr. Dalvi nabbed them with the help of the restaurant staff.

Past record

All three were arrested under Section 41 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Ms. Chaudhary said that Mr. Dagar has criminal cases against him at police stations in Leh and Jammu & Kashmir, and was earlier arrested by the Special Task Force, Uttarakhand.
