Legendary sax player Charles Lloyd to be artist-in-residence at Newport Jazz Festival

NEWPORT, R.I. — George Wein, founding producer of the Newport Jazz Festival, announced Wednesday that saxophone player Charles Lloyd will be artist-in-residence at this summer's Festival, held Aug. 3-5.

Lloyd, who turns 80 in March, has played with everyone from Cannonball Adderly to The Beach Boys.  "The thought of making this personal milestone for Charles the centerpiece of this year's festival was impossible to resist," Wein said.

At Newport, Lloyd will play with a different one of his ensembles on each day of the festival: Sangam, with Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland; Charles Lloyd New Quartet, with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers, and Eric Harland; Charles Lloyd & Friends, featuring Lucinda Williams with Jason Moran, Marvin Sewell, Stuart Mathis, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland.  (Harland is Lloyd's long-time drummer.)

The first wave of artists announcements for the jazz festival will be on Jan. 23.  All ticket types for the festival will go on sale that day at 10 a.m. Check www.newportjazz.org for information.
