MUNCIE, Ind. — We're now less than a month away from the Muncie Mission's 14th annual "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" fundraiser.
The event — which raises money and awareness for the shelter — is set for Saturday, Feb. 10. Registration goes from 8-9 a.m. that morning. Donuts, hot cocoa and coffee will be served. A short opening ceremony will start after registration.
This year's event will have a different starting point. Rather than begin at the Muncie Fieldhouse, which was damaged from storms in November, the walk will kick off at the Horizon Convention Center, according to the Muncie Mission's Facebook page.
A goal is set to raise $100,000. The event's website states that funds from the walk will specifically go toward providing food, shelter, counseling and programs. This includes its emergency housing, recovery program, transitional housing program, family services, food pantry and neighborhood lunch program.
"We feed an average of 250 meals per day," Muncie Mission executive director Frank Baldwin said in a release. "The meal program is utilized by our neighbors and our men residents. We are happy to meet this need, but we can’t do it without the generosity of the community."
A donation of $25 will provide 12 meals for homeless men and/or families in need. Twenty walkers collecting $50 each will provide 487 meals. It took more than 84,200 meals to meet Muncie Mission’s needs last year, according to a release.
An inclement weather date for the walk has been set for Feb. 17.
Online registration is available at www.walkformunciemission.com. Those not participating in the walk who still want to contribute can donate on the website.
