Amalorpavam students bag bronze trophy at Kala Utsav

They performed drama under the title ‘Mahishasura Vadham’

Students of Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, representing the Union Territory of Puducherry, bagged the third place for the best theatre art performed at the national level Kala Utsav competition organised by the Ministry for Human Resource Development (MHRD) and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi.

The team comprising 10 students of Class IX and XI were awarded bronze trophy and medals and a cash prize of ₹50,000 on January 6.

The Kala Utsav 2017, a national-level theatre art competition, was held in Bhopal from January 3 to 6. It is an initiative of MHRD under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), which promotes arts in education by nurturing and showcasing the talents of students including dance, music, theatre and visual arts.

Gold medals

A.L.P. Antonius Britto, principal, in a press release stated that this was the first national award won by the students of Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School for the Union Territory of Puducherry in the Kala Utsav competition.

The winners were given a grand welcome by the founder, correspondent and senior principal S.A. Lourdusamy, who announced that gold medals will be awarded to all of them. Amalorpavam students bagged the first prize in the district level competition for staging ‘Baktha Prahaladhan’ and first prize at the state level competition performing Therukoothu – a dying folk art under the title ‘Krishna Leela’.

For the national level competition, the students performed drama under the title ‘Mahishasura Vadham’ in the style of Therukoothu.
