Modern Society Apparel, a Springfield men's and women's casual clothing store, plans to add two locations in the Kansas City region.

A store in Leawood, a suburban community on the Kansas side of the state line, is expected to open in late March or early April.

It is at 5040 W. 119th St. in the Town Center Plaza.

The new shop will have "a lot of similarities" to the Springfield store, co-owner Andrea Pena said.

"We'll be able to pick up some other brands we're not able to carry in Springfield," she added, citing differences in Kansas City and Springfield markets including client base and the need for competing local fashion outlets to carry differing clothing brands.

In Springfield, Modern Society carries women's lines including Gentle Fawn and Goldie London and men's brands such as Mizzen + Main.

Pena, who owns the store with her husband, Bryan Pena, said the couple wants to open another store between downtown Kansas City and south Country Club Plaza, a high-end shopping district that's home to fashion brands like Anthropologie and Cole Haan.

Bryan Pena grew up in Harrisonville, a suburban community on the Missouri side of the state line where Pena's parents still live. He lived in Kansas City and in Overland Park, Kansas before moving to Springfield a decade ago.

Modern Society Apparel opened in September 2011 in downtown Springfield and was voted Downtown Springfield Association Business of the Year in 2014.

The following year, it moved to the Brentwood Center on South Glenstone Avenue.

Andrea Pena said the couple has no specific plans to expand Modern Society further at the moment, but that they "would love to" look at additional cities in the future.
