Ubiles filling up his plate
Albany
Tuesday night, Edwin Ubiles was working his night job, playing for the Albany Patroons of the North American Premier Basketball League. And he did what he is paid to do, scoring a game-high 28 points and leading the Patroons to a 112-97 win over the Ohio Cardinals in front of an announced crowd of 437.
Wednesday afternoon, he's going old school. As in back to school. Ubiles, who was a student at Siena College from 2006-10, has one more class to take before he can graduate. And that class, Creative Arts, starts Wednesday.
"Of course it will feel weird," Ubiles said with a laugh.
He will be walking the same campus he walked as a high-powered college athlete when he played for the Saints. During his time there, Siena made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Ubiles has been back to Siena in the past, working out with the Saints' basketball team. This will be different. Just going into a class with current students who are 10 years younger than he is will be, uh, different.
"I don't know what that will feel like," he said. "It will be nice to be back on campus again."
Before graduation came around, Ubiles left school to pursue his dream of playing pro basketball. He accomplished that, and, along the way, became the only Siena player to play in an NBA game. That came in 2012 when he had a brief stint with the Washington Wizards.
Most of his pro basketball life, Ubiles has played overseas. At the start of this year, though, he decided to stay home. Part of the reason was he wanted to spend more time with his wife, Courtney, 8-year-old twins Laila and Thalia, and his 7-month old son, Edwin Jr.
He also wanted to complete his degree, a promise he made to himself when he left Siena early.
"I wanted to get it out of the way so my kids, when they grow up, will see the importance of an education," Ubiles said.
The Creative Arts class he is taking is held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. and lasts for two hours. The Patroons don't have any home games left where there would be a conflict. However, there are several away games and travel that would affect his class load.
Ubiles said he will talk to his professor at Siena when that comes up.
"If he is in school and has to miss a practice or a game, we have no problem with that," Patroons coach Derrick Rowland said.
Ubiles said that come May, he will be in cap and gown to accept his diploma.
"My wife wants me to do that," Ubiles said. "I want to do it, too. "
Of course, in the Patroons' locker room after the game, Ubiles was taking some ribbing about heading back to the books.
"That's great," Jamario Moon said, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Only one class? If I only had one class, I would probably go back to school, too."
Ubiles made 11 of 23 shots Tuesday as the Patroons improved to 4-1.
"He is a great scorer," Rowland said. "We try to get him as many opportunities as we can."
Moon and Lloyd Johnson added 18 points each for the Patroons, who led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter before the Cardinals (4-1) got as close as nine. One reason the game got close was the continued ineptness of the Patroons from the free throw line. They missed 21 of 49 free throws.
Johnson had 11 of his points in the final 12 minutes.
Moon added a double-double with 12 rebounds and Deandre Thomas also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Torren Jones added 19 points.
