LYONS — Consumers Energy is advising outdoor enthusiasts to avoid ice near dams.
The utility operates 13 river hydro generating plants on five Michigan rivers, including Webber Hydro on the Grand River in Lyons.
“Conditions near hydro generating plants can change rapidly upstream and downstream due to water temperature fluctuations, current, unpredictable weather and ice damming,” said Aaron Kantor, director of emergency management and public safety for Consumers Energy. “For their safety, we caution snowmobilers, ice anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts to stay clear of ice surrounding these facilities.”
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources offers ice safety tips, which include never venturing onto ice without at least one other person, rope, ice picks and a flotation device. The agency reminds anyone who sees someone fall through ice to call 911 immediately.
