How major US stock indexes fared on Tuesday

U.S. stocks closed lower Tuesday, erasing an early gain that briefly sent the Dow Jones industrial average past 26,000 points for the first time.

Losses by industrial and technology companies accounted for much of the slide. Energy stocks also fell as crude oil prices declined. Health care stocks were among the gainers.

On Tuesday:

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 9.82 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,776.42.

The Dow lost 10.33 points, or 0.04 percent, to 25,792.86.

The Nasdaq shed 37.38 points, or 0.5 percent, to 7,223.69.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks gave up 19 points, or 1.2 percent, to 1,572.97.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 102.81 points, or 3.9 percent.

The Dow is up 1,073.64 points, or 4.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 320.29 points, or 4.6 percent.

The Russell 2000 is up 37.46 points, or 2.4 percent.
