Tyagaraja music festival kicks off

The week-long fest is on till Sunday

Listening to music is a gift and taking part in a music festival is a God’s gift, as these events give the much-needed mental relaxation and help people to tread a righteous path, said Special Chief Secretary (Sports & Youth Advancement) L.V. Subrahmanyam here on Monday.

Inaugurating the week-long music festival to commemorate the birth anniversary of saint Tyagaraja at Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao Government Music and Dance College here, Mr.Subramanyam appreciated the Vijayawada Music Academy and the Department of Language and Culture for taking up the initiative to organise the classical music festival highlighting the saint’s works.

The music festival commenced with the vocal concert of Anuvrata Narasimhan (Tirupati), supported by Abhijit Narasimhan on violin and Aravind on mridangam.

Later, Malladi Karthika Triveni rendered three Tyagaraja keertanas for which Ganduri Srinivasa Murthy and Parupalli Balasubrahmanyam rendered support on violin and mridangam respectively.

“The inaugural day also witnessed C.V.P. Sastry churning out popular Thyaraja keertanas with N. Ch. Buchayacharyulu and N.S. Kalyanaraman giving violin and mridangam support respectively along with M. Haribabu on ghatam. The day ended with violin solo of Mangalampalli Surya Deepti,” said Seeram Subrahmanyam, general secretary, Vijayawada Music Academy.

The week long festival will conclude on January 21.
