College hockey team made a day special

To the editor,
I would like to send a thank-you to the Adrian College men’s hockey team as they demonstrated what it is like to be a working part of this community.

My two sons were enjoying their day off school for the MLK holiday with three of their hockey buddies from the 2006 Sylvania North Stars AAA team. The boys had worked hard to shovel out a makeshift ice rink on Deer Pond here in Adrian and were having fun playing a two-on-two hockey game, with the kid brother serving as the referee. The boys had no idea what was in store for later that day.

Coach Adam Krug and I had recently discussed letting his team skate on the pond for a team-building experience. Then my phone rang and Coach Krug said, “there is no time like the present. ... Let’s make this happen today!” The whole thing materialized in about a hour. Within 10 minutes Coach Krug and Coach Shaun Skelly showed up at the house with extra shovels and began shoveling a second rink.

Before I knew it the entire Bulldog roster was parked in my driveway. Each member of the team made sure to shake my hand and shake my wife’s hand and thanked us for the opportunity to reach back to their youth and play a little pond hockey. There was two rinks going at once. The shouts and hollers showed the men were playing a game with an unabashed youthful enthusiasm all while soaking in their surroundings. They included the youth skaters as if they were part of the team.

The impromptu 4-on-4 round robin hockey tournament lasted for two hours and even after Coach Krug called it a day stragglers stayed out on the ice until almost dusk. It was a surreal experience and seeing the ear-to-ear smiles on my sons’ and their buddies’ faces is something that I will never forget.

Later on that evening as I drove the exhausted boys back to their respective homes they all agreed that this was probably one of the best experiences they’ve had in their short lives.

Our community is lucky to have the Bulldog hockey program. These fine young student athletes are learning more than hockey and their chosen course of study while at Adrian College. There is a real chance this experience will have a lasting impact on one of the five boys who experienced it.

To Coach Adam Krug, Coach Shaun Skelly and the entire Bulldog hockey program, thanks again for making the day one that five young boys that will never forget.

To all members of the community, go out and enjoy an Adrian College hockey game. These young men are what NCAA athletics is all about and making rooting for their team an easy thing to do! We are lucky to have them here in this community.

Tecumseh, residents did the right thing

To the editor,
Today, Monday, Jan. 15th, the Tecumseh City Council approved a motion to grant similar use to the Neighbors of Hope women's and children’s homeless shelter. We applaud this decision by the Tecumseh City Council.

When people speak out and demand better from their elected leaders, those leaders will listen. Let this vote show all who read this that the voters in our great American democracy are the ones in charge. Keep pressure on your elected representatives both local and national to do the right thing.

Thank you,
