These are the five restaurants our scene reporter believes will stoke Springfield's hunger in the coming year. Do you agree with his picks? Greg Holman/News-Leader
Big Island Grill, a Hawaiian-themed restaurant in southeast Springfield, closed Saturday.
The restaurant at 2925 E. Battlefield announced the impending closure last week on Facebook.
It opened in 2016, the News-Leader previously reported, amid a flurry of Springfield eateries promoting the cuisine of the Aloha State.
Owned by brothers John and Johnson Tan, Big Island Grill replaced Flo, a high-end wine bar that the Tan brothers opened in 2010.
The Tan brothers also own Ocean Zen, an Asian fusion restaurant they opened in 2004 on South Glenstone Ave., later moving to a larger Battlefield Road building. In 2014, they moved it to a much larger building on South National Ave. that once was home to a Chinese restaurant, Mr. Yen's.
The Tans also own contemporary Chinese restaurants 5 Spice and Yum Yum Bowl, which opened in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
The News-Leader reached out to the Tan brothers but did not immediately receive a response.
