The mass base of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will be widened by accommodating parties, individuals and groups from outside the front, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, CPI(M) State secretary, has said.
Inaugurating the district conference of the party here on Tuesday, Mr. Balakrishnan said the United Democratic Front (UDF) was facing a crisis and a few parties, including the Kerala Congress (M) and the Janata Dal led by M.P. Veerendrakumar, had parted ways with it.
The Kerala Congress (M) was maintaining an independent stand whereas the Janata Dal had indicated its inclination to move along with the Left. The State committee of the CPI (M) and the LDF would decide on the approach towards the Janata Dal, he said.
Mr. Balakrishnan said the UDF was reduced to a coalition of the Congress and the Muslim League. The BJP-led NDA too was facing a crisis as many of its partners had raised the banner of revolt. At the same time, the acceptability and support base of the LDF was widening in the State, he said.
Supreme Court issue
On the issue of four senior judges of the Supreme Court holding a press conference complaining about the way in which cases were handled in the apex court, Mr. Balakrishnan said the Parliament should deliberate on the issue.
Referring to allegations that the party had adopted a pro-China stand, the party polit bureau member said the CPI(M) had never sided with China or Soviet Union. Critics had even accused E.M.S. Namboothirippad of being a pro-Chinese when he commented that the conflict between China and India should be resolved through discussion, he said.
The CPI(M) had always taken an independent stand on such issues. The party has been consistent in its stand against imperialism and always stood for socialism. “Those who accuses the CPI(M) of being pro-China reveal their pro-imperialistic stance. The BJP had always taken a stand supporting imperialism,” he said.
