And one couple hoped the Trumps would add some celebrity to their wedding.

Brianna and Timothy Dargert, of Orland Park Illinois, invited Melania Trump, 47, and Donald Trump, 71, to their wedding in May last year.

Donald and Melania could not make it - but they didn’t ignore the invitation.

A few months later, the couple were thrilled to receive a response from the President and First Lady.

Post from the White House addressed to the couple read: “We join your family and friends in celebrating this joyous occasion and your love and commitment to one another.

“May your hearts grow fonder and your love deeper each day, and may God continue to bless your life together.”

The couple spoke to Fox 32 News to share their happiness at receiving the unexpected letter.

They said: “We both admire the President greatly, and to receive something from him personally completely touched our hearts.

“It is wonderful to see that he truly cares about the American people.”

Melania has undertaken many new duties as First Lady of the United States, one of which is to acknowledge important dates in the American calendar.

But she faced a backlash after tweeting out on Martin Luther King Day earlier this week.

January 15 is the anniversary of the activists birthday, and is a day of celebration for many.

Melania tweeted: “Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. & his service to this great country.  I am honored to be First Lady of a nation that continually strives for equality & justice for all. #MLKDay”

However, numerous Twitter users were unhappy with the First Lady’s message.

One said: “You might want to talk to your husband about equality and justice for all.”

Another wrote: “Good luck with ‘striving’ – your husband is doing an excellent job of setting back the fight for equality by decades.”
