Mumbai: BMC starts 34 fire inspection cells across city

Mumbai: The BMC finally started 34 fire inspection cells across Mumbai to keep a check on the commercial and the residential premises following the fire safety norms or not. After the Kamala Mills fire which killed 14 people and Sakinaka farsan workshop blaze killing 12 labourers the civic corporation set up these inspection cells to check fire safety lapses if any.
A meeting on induction of fire officers in these 34 inspection cells was held on Tuesday at Byculla fire station under the supervision of Chief Fire Officer Prabhat Rahangdale who guided them what roles they will play like regular inspection in their respective area and to check fire safety norms been followed or not. Also what necessary action they should initiate if anyone found not adhering the safety measures.
Meanwhile, in last two days, the civic corporation has inspected 619 restaurants and hotels. Out of which, fire safety lapses have been found in 3 hotels, and hence, as per Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act notice been issued and they have been sealed. The names of the sealed hotels are ‘Ambika Sweets’ of Nagpada area, Sion’s ‘Pillai farsan mart’ and ‘Better Home’ in Andheri. In addition, BMC demolised unauthorized structures in 59 hotels.
