Two Caldwell residents arrested following a shoplifting incident at a Southgate Parkway business in Cambridge are now facing additional charges after allegedly bringing illegal narcotics into the Guernsey County Jail.
Sheriff’s deputies charged Edgar J. Poland Jr., 34, with illegal conveyance of prohibited items into a correction facility, a third-degree felony, and aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, for allegedly brining Oxycodone into the county jail.
Poland was given a Jan. 19 deadline to advise the Cambridge Municipal Court if he wants a preliminary hearing. The pills were reportedly concealed inside a cigarette package.
Bond for Poland was set at $20,000 with no 10 percent allowed. He remained incarcerated in the county jail as of press time Wednesday.
Poland is also facing one count each of theft and criminal damaging for the alleged incident at the Cambridge Walmart. An arraignment hearing in that case was continued to Jan. 19.
Meanwhile, Nicole L. Haga, 31, is facing one count of possession of heroin, a fifth-degree felony, after corrections officers found a "corner bag" of heroin in her purse upon being booked into the county jail.
Haga was also given a Jan. 19 deadline to advise the court if she wants a preliminary hearing for the felony offense.
Haga is also facing single misdemeanor offenses for possession of drug abuse instruments and possession of drug paraphernalia following her arrest at Walmart. Her arraignment on those charges was continued to Jan. 19.
Bond for Haga was set at $10,000 with no 10 percent allowed. She remained incarcerated in the county jail as of press time.
A search of Haga at the jail also revealed "four bindles of suspected narcotics and a baggie of a crystal-like substance suspected to be meth" concealed inside her bra. The substance was sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation for testing.
Additional charges may be filed against Haga at a later date based on the results of the tests.
According to Cambridge police reports, officers were dispatched to Walmart at 1:59 a.m. Sunday after a male, later identified as Poland, allegedly fled the store with five packages of markers valued at $59.59.
Haga, who was reportedly with Poland, was detained at the store.
Officers located Poland hiding behind a nearby restaurant on Southgate Parkway a short time later and took him into custody.
Police said Haga gave consent to search her purse during the investigation and officers found two syringes and a spoon with an unknown residue. Haga told police the items belonged to Poland, but he denied ownership.
A police K-9 indicated illegal narcotics or drug-related items were inside a Pontiac Sunfire driven to the store by the suspects. A probable cause search revealed two additional syringes and another spoon with an unknown residue.
The incidents at Walmart remained under investigation by the Cambridge Police Department and Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office.
