MARLBOROUGH – Anglers from across New England will be lured to fly-tying seminars, casting demonstrations and racks of the newest rods and equipment during this weekend’s Fly Fishing Show.
The annual showcase at the Best Western Royal Plaza Trade Center is the kickoff to angling season for many expert and novice fly fishermen, said Ben Furmisky, president and CEO of the show.
“They are diehards that are there for a purpose,” he said.
The convention – which is the third largest in the country each year – features more than 100 exhibitor booths showcasing the latest in foreign and domestic tackle and rod equipment, clothing, accessories and fly fishing resorts and lodges, said Furmisky.
“It’s the biggest fly fishing event in all of New England,” he said. “It’s a great spot for families and friends to hang out and have a good time. Most people are coming to see the new equipment. You can’t see it all in one day.”
Novice and experienced fishermen can improve their casting skills by attending seminars by experts in the field, including Jeff Currier, Ed Lombardo, Gary Borger and Bob Clouser.
A few of the country’s best fly-tiers, including Ed Engle, Alan Caolo, Joe Cordeiro, Tim Flager and Nate Brumley will share their skills during exhibitions throughout the weekend. Fly tying is the art of making artificial flies.
“When you see them live you can interact,” he said. “It’s not like watching a video on YouTube.”
Hourly presentations on up and coming fly fishing destinations, including the Upper Connecticut River, Iceland and the Delaware Bend, will be held.
The festivities will also include a film festival on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. featuring various movies on the industry. The cost to attend the festival is $15.
More than 6,000 people are expected to attend the show.
“It’s a significant event to come through Marlborough,” said Furmisky.
Furmisky called the show an ideal spot for new and experienced fly fishermen to improve their skills, grab some new equipment, meet and chat with other enthusiasts and avoid cabin fever.
“It gets everybody amped up for the new season,” said Furmisky.
The show will be held Friday through Sunday. Admission is $15 for one day, $25 for two days and $35 for all three days. There is no admission fee for children under 5 and Boy and Girl Scouts dressed in uniform. Admission is $5 for children under 12.
