High vet costs to blame for cat count, Letters, Dec. 31
The College of Veterinarians of Ontario would like to clarify issues raised in Marion Burt’s letter linking the large cat population to fees charged by veterinarians.
The college appreciates the commitment of rescue organizations and individuals in addressing concerns related to the feral cat population. The college is actually the organization that regulates the practice of veterinary medicine in Ontario.
These regulations do not comment on the fees for veterinary services nor do they impede the ability of veterinarians to work co-operatively with individuals and community groups to address animal-welfare concerns.
In fact, many veterinarians across the province are generous in contributing their time and professional services in support of animal-welfare initiatives, including offering spay/neuter programs for companion animals at a low or no-cost.
The college is proud of the dedication to animal welfare that is demonstrated by the veterinary profession.
