Mazda 2, given that we have one that's 12 years old, no sign of any rust anywhere, has about 75k on it, runs like a dream and is worth £500 according to WBAC
I wouldn't class it as a banger TBH
Nissan Micra
Yaris
MkII Nissan Micras will outlive the human race, if they are kept free from rust.
Unfortunately most of them have been driven into the ground by uncaring delivery drivers.
Yaris! Mine was truly amazing and would have outlived me if it wasn't for rust

Yaris! Mine was totes amazeballs...
Father had it as ex-demonstrator for £6.5k, then us, nearly 14 years / 140k, and in that time it cost servicing/replacement brakes, one wheel bearing and one alternator.
It finally died due to the glow plugs failing, seized into engine, so was MOT fail and £1200+ risk of cracking the (alloy) engine.
We traded it in for £500, warning light and all...
How about a peugeot 106?
I've picked up a couple of mk1 focuses for around that. I never needed to repair the first one, wrote it off before I had the chance, but the couple of things that went wrong with the 2nd one I have were easy and cheap to fix. Bit over budget but I paid about 700 for one with 95k on the clock - I maybe could have haggled down but was in a bit of a tight situation and needed a car fast.
I don't really know a lot about the insurance though, I seem to be paying a lot on it but that might be because I've only been a named driver for just over a year, with no no claims and a write off in my first year...
My volvo was £400 and insurance is £130...
Ford Ka?
My daughter had 2, cheap to repair and run, watch out for rust on the sills and around filler cap.
Bought one as a 2nd car 2 years ago, 10 yr old, 50k on clock for £400 and cost very little in repairs. Mot due nxt month, fingers crossed it should be ok
