Actor/writer Danny McBride and writer Jody Hill are known for their successful collaborations on “Eastbound and Down” and “Vice Principals” for HBO.
But there was an earlier comedy hit by the pair, “The Foot Fist Way” in 2006, that deserves rediscovery. McBride plays a confident but clueless martial arts instructor — half Michael Scott from “The Office” and half Martin Kove from “The Karate Kid” — who uses stubbornness and tae kwon do to put together his crumbling life. Hill co-stars and directs.
The Chronicle gave the movie its highest rating when “The Foot Fist Way” came out, calling it “low budget in all the right ways.” But see for yourself when SF Sketchfest screens the film Sunday, Jan. 21, at the Castro Theatre as part of a tribute event in honor of McBride and Hill.
