President Trump is "fit for duty," but could lose 10 to 15 pounds and currently taking propecia to promote hair growth, White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson told reporters Tuesday.
"In summary, the presidents overall health is excellent ... he continues to enjoy the significant long-term cardiac and overall health benefits that come from a lifetime of abstinence from tobacco and alcohol," Jackson said.
But the physician did give the president advice about diet and exercise, and said he recommended a diet that's lower in fat and carbohydrates, and that he take more exercise.
Jackson said Trump is 6'3" and is 239 pounds, three pounds more than his last physical, and just one pound short of being classified as "obese." That's what prompted Jackson to recommend exercise and shoot for losing 10 to 15 pounds.
"He is more enthusiastic about the diet part than the exercise part but we are going to do both," Jackson said, noting that he would work with the president over the next year.
Jackson also upped Trump's cholesterol-lowering drug during the appointment to decrease cardiac risk. He also said Trump sometimes takes a sleeping aid when traveling around the world.
He said Trump's use of the hair-loss drug was previously reported by Dr. Lawrence Altman of the New York Times, who was told about the prescription by Dr. Harold Bornstein, Trump's longtime doctor in New York, but it had not been released as part of the medical history document that Trump presented on the Dr. Oz show.
Jackson also revealed that he takes Crestor to lower his cholesterol, an aspirin for heart health, uses a creme for his rosacea and takes a multivitamin every day. Still, he said several times that Trump is healthy for his age.
"All clinical data indicate that the president is currently healthy, and that he will remain so for the duration of his presidency," Jackson said.
All the information released by Jackson, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, was with Trump's consent. As with past presidents, the details given during the exam were similar to those of past presidents.
Trump's medical exam took place Friday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Jackson supervised and carried out some of the exam alongside other medical experts.
