The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Tuesday sealed 50 shops running from unauthorised constructions at basements in Defence Colony market for misusing the property. “These basements were constructed illegally so action was initiated after getting instructions from Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee,” said a senior SDMC official.
“The building department of the Central Zone acting on the instructions of the empowered committee sealed the basements despite some resistance from the traders,” he said. In the ongoing sealing drive, the civic body had sealed some famous shops and restaurants in the same market on December 22 for violating the provisions of “Master Plan-2021”.
The official reiterated that there is no need for sending any prior notice just before the action as action was taken as per the order issued by the SC-appointed committee.
It may be noted that Defence Colony was earlier known as shopping-cum-residential complex wherein ground floor was allowed for running commercial activities and first floors were meant for residential purposes. But, the market was termed as local shopping center after ‘Master Plan 2021’ came in force.
