DUBAI: A worker who fatally shoved his roommate out of the window during a drunken spat has seen 15 years added to his 10-year-jail term by the Dubai Appeals Court.
The Asian defendant, 30, grabbed his roommate from behind, dragged him, lifted him and shoved him out. He fell on the ground and sustained brain hemorrhage besides multiple fractures and injuries.
This happened at the workers’ barracks of a plumbing company in the Dubai Investments Park on Nov.11.2016 after the deceased uttered offensive statements against the defendant’s mother and sister.
The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced him to ten years in jail to be followed by deportation. Prosecutors appealed the ruling and asked the Dubai Appeals Court to award him the toughest punishment.
During a hearing on Nov.26.2017 he denied the murder and entreated the court for mercy. However, the Appeals Court has rejected his plea and sentenced him to 25 years in jail plus deportation.
In Jebel Ali Police Station records, a sergeant received an alert that a man had fallen to his death from the building. A lieutenant suspected foul play and sought the help of eyewitnesses in clarifying the incident.
Witnesses revealed the defendant, the deceased and two of their friends were in the room upstairs consuming alcohol. Both friends left and the defendant continued drinking with the deceased.
In the course of events the deceased requested the defendant to bring him some water. The defendant refused to obey him. They engaged in a heated argument.
The deceased insulted the defendant and expressed that he wanted to have physical affairs with the defendant’s mother and sister. He then assaulted the defendant. The defendant boiled with anger.
By then the defendant was standing near the window. He took the deceased by surprise, seized his arm, pulled him and shoved him out of the window.
A police staff sergeant said the defendant argued that the deceased uttered the inappropriate statement about his mother and sisters. He then punched the defendant and slapped him in the face.
He continued hitting him on the head and screaming obscenities until the defendant seized him in a fit of anger. The deceased did not retaliate as he was extremely intoxicated.
The defendant then popped his head out of the window, looked at the dead body, returned inside and fell asleep. “I wanted to get rid of him,” he confessed. The deceased succumbed to brain haemorrhage.
