ABU DHABI: The Netherlands Embassy in the UAE jointly with Masdar will host a photography exhibition at the Masdar City Eco-Villa highlighting the effects of climate change until the beginning of February.
The exhibition entitled “Where We Will Go?” presents the work of Dutch photographer and academic Kadir van Lohuizen who spent three years documenting the impact of rising sea levels around the world.
“Researching and working on this project about the human consequences of the rising sea level, I was quite shocked how urgent the situation already is,” said Kadir. “In countries like Bangladesh there are already millions of climate refugees. And even for a city like Miami it is hard to believe that part of the city will be under water by 2060.”
Thirty photographs take visitors on a visual journey to the four corners of the Earth, from Greenland in the Arctic to Fiji and Kiribati in the Pacific Islands, through Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea and Panama, to the UK and the United States.
“Where Will We Go?” runs from January 16- February 16 at the Masdar Eco-Villa, a sustainable villa prototype located at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. An audio-visual presentation across three 55-inch TV screens combining photography, film, sound and text forms the centrepiece of the exhibition.
“We are excited to host such an impactful show at our Eco Villa. In addition to bringing such an significant issue to light through art, it allows visitors a chance to tour the Eco Villa,” said Yousef Baselaib, Executive Director for Sustainable Real Estate at Masdar. “We’re grateful to be partnering with the Netherlands Embassy for this opportunity and look forward to welcoming visitors to Masdar City throughout this month.”
Taking its name from a book by Lohuizen on the same subject, the exhibition is also supported by the NOOR Foundation, the UN Environment Programme and the rights group Displacement Solutions.
Frank Mollen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UAE said, “The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is delighted to be hosting this exhibition in collaboration with Masdar. Kadir’s work emphasises global concerns, that can no longer be ignored. Our country has for centuries been well aware of the challenges posed by rising water levels.”
