Teacher killed, 5 students injured in accident

AGovernment school teacher was killed and five students sustained injuries after a PRTC bus ferrying the students collided with a truck on National Highway-I in Goraya town of the district on Tuesday morning.

A teacher at Government Senior Secondary School, Sangrur, Gurcharan Singh died on the spot while five students of the school were admitted to the local civil hospital with minor injuries.

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Education Minister Aruna Chaudhary have expressed shock and grief over the tragic road accident.

The Chief Minister has also directed Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner to ensure the best possible free of cost treatment to those injured in the mishap and extend all possible help to them.

The tragedy occurred when the ill-fated PRTC bus carrying about 50 children and three teachers from Government Senior Secondary School, Tungan in Sangrur district, on an educational trip to Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala, rammed into a stationary truck at Goraya. The truck driver fled the spot.

Expressing his heartfelt condolences for the bereaved family of the school teacher, Capt Amarinder prayed to the Almighty to give them courage to bear this irreparable loss and grant eternal peace to the departed soul. He also wished for speedy recovery for the injured students.

Deeply condoling the loss of life and expressing heartfelt sympathy with the injured, Chaudhary said that the District Education Officer (Secondary) Harkawaljit Kaur has been instructed to go on the spot and take stock of the situation.

Wishing speedy recovery for the injured children, the Minister said that no stone would be left unturned to extend every possible assistance to the family of the deceased teacher and to those injured.
