An attorney deemed a “first class S.O.B.” on President Richard Nixon’s “enemies list” says President Trump’s “fake news” awards are likely to backfire and help the careers of journalists that Trump seeks to demean.
“When Trump attacks in this case, I think it’s a badge of honor,” said attorney Sidney Davidoff, one of 20 people named on the 1971 "enemies list" drafted by Nixon’s staff, and one of just four still living.
“In the end you’re going to be glorified for it," Davidoff predicted.
The White House says the "fake news" awards will be presented Wednesday, but it’s unclear what form the supposed ceremony will take. Trump has teased the awards for weeks, as has White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
Davidoff, whose work for then-New York City Mayor John Lindsay landed him on the Nixon list, said being identified was “the greatest honor of my life.”
He jokes that his wife, New York Daily News columnist Linda Stasi, wouldn’t mind receiving one of Trump’s awards. He said Trump once attended a book party for Stasi, but more recently "called and complained" about her writing.
"She hopes to win an award for this,” he said.
Stasi said in an email "[he] said it as a joke I’m sure, but I’d be happy to ‘win.’” She agreed the awards may backfire, writing that “in this atmosphere, it’s certainly a possibility.”
Nixon’s enemies list included three journalists, none of whom are still living. Labor activists, businessmen, and a diverse group of other prominent Americans also made the list.
Trump uses the term "fake news" to broadly dismiss unfavorable coverage, but also has singled out reporting errors by news outlets. Davidoff said journalists who make mistakes have an obligation to fix errors, but that “news is changing all day long.”
In a likely distinction from Trump's awardees, Davidoff faced politically motivated trouble with the Internal Revenue Service.
“Professionally, it’s done nothing to hurt me," he said. “It’s amazing how many people still come to me, of all the things I did in my life, and I think I did a lot, what most people want to talk about is that time and the enemies list."
