WINSTED — Winsted police have identified the victim of Sunday’s one-vehicle crash on Torrington Road as a local 37-year-old man.

Richard Halsted Jr., of 217 Colebrook Rd., Winsted, died after sustaining a severe head injury in the accident, according to police.

Officers responded to the crash on Torrington Road at approximately 8:22 p.m., according to a release from Chief William Fitzgerald.

“The vehicle was (traveling) north bound on Torrington Road when the vehicle crossed the yellow line, drove off the road (the west side of the road) and hit a large boulder,” said Fitzgerald in the release.

Halsted Jr. was the only occupant of the vehicle, according to police. He was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, then taken to St. Francis Hospital by Life Star helicopter. His identity was being withheld until family members were notified, the department said Monday.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, Fitzgerald said.
