Martial had been linked with a move to the Emirates in part exchange for Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez had been expected to join Manchester City before a late bid from rivals Manchester United, although Arsenal are reluctant to sell.

With Sanchez’s contract expiring in the summer, United are prepared to pay £35million for the frontman but conflicting reports suggest the Gunners want cash plus either Henrikh Mkhitaryan or Anthony Martial.

Mkhitaryan was left out of the Red Devils’ matchday squad to face Stoke, but Martial put in a superb display – including an excellent goal – and United fans have been ridiculing talk of the Frenchman leaving Old Trafford.
