Village library seeks national status
XINYUAN Village in Shihudang Town, one of the winners of last year’s National Model Villages, has signed up for the National Village Library election.
The village library in Xinyuan is the only village-level applicant across rural areas of Shanghai.
“Our confidence lies in the popularity and public praise of the library among locals,” said Cao Yuhui, the village’s Party secretary.
The library was established 10 years ago.
Covering just 80 square meters, it has 20 bookcases, a shelf of newspapers and four networked computers for online searches. Sixteen kinds of newspapers and magazines, 3,500 books and a collection of over 100 videos can be found, covering 23 areas including culture, arts, agriculture and health care.
The library has become an important part of locals’ daily life and receives numerous visitors every day. In the morning, older villagers may be seen practicing their calligraphy skills. Others would be reading newspapers quietly. After lunch, farmers might come looking for agricultural books, hoping to learn useful planting techniques.
“I love to read books on knowledge of agriculture and forestry. The books in the library can inspire me in crop growing and farm management,” said villager Cao Linkun. Cao’s farm won the honorary title of “Excellent Family Farm” a year ago as a result of Cao’s studies at the library.
Children usually visit to read story books in the afternoon after school. “We have more young readers during summer and winter holidays. Stories books like ‘Pilgrimage to the West’ are popular among children,” said one of the library’s staff.
The library has become a holiday paradise for children. Every summer holiday, children gather at reading meetings held in the library and exchange their opinions and reviews on books. For example, a reading and practical activity themed “My Library, My Dream” was held last summer to promote the all-round development of students and the healthy growth of local students.
Every Wednesday, a calligraphy salon at the library offers local calligraphy enthusiasts the chance to share experiences and improve their skills.
Members of the salon write Spring Festival couplets every year and deliver them to villagers as New Year gifts.
“We are really happy to see neighbors putting our couplets on doors and walls,” said Zhu Jinghuan, a member of the calligraphy salon. “Thanks to the cultural platform offered by the village library.”
