Toronto police say they have located the mother of a newborn baby reportedly found abandoned outdoors on Tuesday morning.

"We have found her, and she is now getting medical care," said Const. David Hopkinson. "I don't believe her injuries to be life-threatening."

The police received reports on Tuesday morning that a baby boy had been found in a commercial plaza at the intersection of Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue.

"We know that the baby had been found a half-hour before the call had been made," said Hopkinson."When officers rushed to the scene, they found the baby's health was in jeopardy."

Details of where and when the baby was born shifted throughout the day.

Police had said earlier Tuesday it appeared likely that the baby was born in a covered outdoor walkway in the shopping plaza less than an hour before being discovered by a passerby. They later said the baby could be up to a few days old.

Toronto paramedics told CBC Toronto that the baby was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. The baby's condition has since worsened, and is now considered critical.
