Northville edges Saline for Rock-Kilgore Invitational title

BOYS SWIMMING

LAKER INVITATIONAL: Novi scored a team-high 280.5 points on Jan. 13 to earn its sixth straight title at West Bloomfield's Bob Crosby Natatorium.

The Wildcats were followed by runner-up Farmington-Harrison (220), North Farmington (153.15), Rochester (108) and the host Lakers (80).

Fast Heat 4 winners for Novi included Max Robbins in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.26) and Maxwell Williams in the 100 backstroke (57.15). The Wildcats' Jack McClure was the top 1-meter diver with 353.75 points (11 dives).

Farmington-Harrison Trevor Jones figured in four firsts winning Heat 4 the 200 freestyle (1:48.19) and 100 butterfly (53.92). He also teamed up with Brody Jamieson, Drew Hoelscher and Drew Hinckley for a first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.97). The foursome of Jones, Hoelscher, Jamieson and Hinckley also took first in the 400 freesytle relay (3:19.42).

Matt Lane also took the 100 breaststroke (1:04.65).

North Farmington's Conor East captured the Heat 4 200 individual medley (2:04.61) and teamed up with Michael Shan, David Schmall and Carl Schmidt for a first in the 200 medley relay (1:44.74).

West Bloomfield's Nate Neeley swept the 50- and 100 freestyles in Heat 4 with times of 22.12 and 49.04, respectively.

ROCK-KILGORE INVITATIONAL: On Jan. 13, fifth-ranked Northville, led by double winner Kirk Maibach, scored a team-best  295 points beat out No. 2 Saline (273) for the title at Salem.

Rounding out the six-school field was Livonia Stevenson (216), Plymouth (136), Salem (128) and Walled Lake Western 48.

Maibach swept the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in 22.21 and 48.49, respectively. He also teamed up with Arthur Greenlee, Jason Nitkiewicz and Cameron Heaven for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.41).

Other fast heat individual winners included: Ben Rojewski (Stevenson), 200 freestyle (1:47.13) and 500 freestyle (4:51.51); Travis Nitkiewicz (Northville), 200 individual medley (1:56.57); Jason Nitkiewicz (Northville), 100 butterfly (53.82); Jared Ehrman (Saline), 100 backstroke (54.13); Matthew Lau (Saline), 100 breaststroke (3:29.59). Plymouth's Benjamin Kirchoff captured the 1-meter diving (324.55 points).

Saline's 200 medley relay team of Ehrman, Lau, Cole Nelson and Ethan Saunders took first (1:37.22), while the Hornets also captured the 400 freestyle relay as Matthew Filsinger, Nelson, Davis Klein and Ehrman were clocked  in 3:17.49.

"I though Kirk Maibach had a nice meet today," Northville coach Rich Bennetts said. "His younger brother Craig also did a really nice job. Nick Mouakial and Orion Shi are starting to improve which will help our depth as we move along. Obviously a pretty good day for us, its always nice to win and kids really did a nice job of bouncing back after a big meet against Novi and not showing any signs of being tired." 

BOYS BASKETBALL

PLYMOUTH 63, SALEM 61: The visiting Wildcats prevailed in a KLAA Black Division tussle on Jan. 12.

Balanced scoring helped Plymouth (5-3, 3-1), with A.J. Neal (12 points), Justin Reynolds (11 points) and Anthony Crump (10 points) all reaching double figures. Just missing was Joey Robb, who garnered nine points.

For Salem (4-5, 0-4) top performers included Jordan Ingram (14 points), Amit Tiwari (10 points), Ben Dierker and Shawn Srivastava (nine points each).

"Classic Park game, it was back and forth all night," Plymouth coach Mike Soukup said. "Shooting was streaky on both sides." 

NORTHVILLE 73, HOWELL 48: Steven Morrissey scored 20 points, while Mark Grimes added 18 as the Mustangs (7-3, 3-2) rolled to a KLAA Black Division win Jan. 12 over the host Highlanders (6-2, 3-2).

Northville getting three triples each from Morrissey and Grimes, jumped out to a 30-13 first quarter lead and never looked back. Paul Kearis chipped in with 10 points as the Mustangs made 13-of-16 free throws.

"We were firing on all cylinders and did a nice job making their best players take tough shots," Northville coach Todd Sander said. "Tonight was one of those nights where almost everything went our way and that's a credit to our team sticking together and practicing hard every day."

Josh Palo scored a game-high 22 for Howell.

STEVENSON 63, HARTLAND 59: Devin Dunn scored 20 points to lift Livonia Stevenson to this KLAA Black Division victory on Jan. 11.

The Spartans (7-0, 4-0) also were helped out by Chris Fazica and Thomas Demers, who each tallied 11 points.

"The third quarter is were we separated a bit as Dunn caused a lot of turnovers that led to layups and assists to Demers," Stevenson assistant coach Chris Haldane aid.

PLYMOUTH 73, CHURCHILL 41: A 26-0 edge in the second quarter and Anthony Crump’s 23-point night lifted the Wildcats to a comfortable KLAA Black Division win on Jan. 9.

Also playing well in the win were Justin Reynolds (12 points) and Joey Robb (11 points).

For the Chargers, Luke Jaroszewicz and Taji Hall scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

“Great team effort,” Plymouth head coach Mike Soukup said. “The boys got after a very athletic group in Churchill. Coach (James) McCulloh has his guys hungry and ready to go."

GIRLS  BASKETBALL

PLYMOUTH 43, SALEM 38: Chantal LeDoux scored 18 points Jan. 12 to lead the Wildcats to a KLAA Black Division win over host Salem.

Also contributing to the Plymouth attack were Gabby Chouinard (10 points) and Sydney McCaig (nine points). Leading the Rocks with 19 points was Lyniah Wilson.

"We really had to grind out this game on the defensive end,” said Plymouth head coach Ryan Ballard, whose team improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the KLAA Black. “I wasn't pleased with all of our turnovers and missed free throws, but our kids competed down the stretch and showed some grit. Our seniors really led the way.”

CANTON 50, FRANKLIN 29: Ashley Criscenti and Alex Bohn each scored 12 points Jan. 9 to pace the visiting Chiefs (5-2, 4-0 in the KLAA Black Division). Criscenti also tallied 10 rebounds for a double-double. Helping the Canton cause with eight points was Abby Sokol, while Alaina Heitmeyer added six points and 10 rebounds.

For the Patriots (3-5), Olivia Napier tallied 12 points while Ashley Deguise scored eight.

“Tonight, everyone on the roster got into the scoring column and it was a great team effort on both ends of the floor,” Canton head coach Rob Heitmeyer said.

PLYMOUTH 57, CHURCHILL 31: A balanced attack sparked the Wildcats to this KLAA Black Division win Jan. 9. Garnering double figures for Plymouth (5-3, 1-2) were Chantal LeDoux (15 points), Angela Schmidt (12 points) and Elle McCaslin (11 points).

Macey Reese and Nasya Thomas scored eight and six points, respectively, for the Chargers (3-4, 0-3).

"I was pleased with our energy and execution from the tip,” Plymouth coach Ryan Ballard said. “This is a carryover from a great practice the day before.”

BOYS HOCKEY

ST. IGNATIUS 3, NOVI 2: Ohio state champion Cleveland St. Ignatius (18-3-1) scored all three goals in the second period Jan. 13 to beat the host Wildcats (5-11) in a non-conference game at Novi Ice Arena.

Bain Kurtz had two of those goals, while Alex Bilardo added a power play for St. Ignatious.

Novi's Chris Martin scored from Mitchell Grinshpun and Joey Vesche in the second period and Maanas Sharma's goal with 10:38 left in regular pulled Novi to within one.

Novi goalie Ethan Hunsinger made 46 saves.

NORTHVILLE 4, NOVI 3 (OT): Jack Sargent's power play goal off an assist from Owen Finkbeiner with 6:51 left in overtime gave the Mustangs (9-4) the victory over the Wildcats (5-10) in a non-division game between KLAA Gold teams Jan. 12 at Novi Ice Arena.

Trailing 3-2, Northville's Joe Tobon scored unassisted with 4:58 left in regularation to send the game to OT.

Sanuda Gunaratne and Cole Smith also tallied goals for the Mustangs, while Deven Laba (two) and Sargent collected added assists. Owen Moruzi was the winning goaltender.

Novi's Alec Giragosian had two power play goals and one assist, while Alex Scarozza added a power play goal and one assist. Other assists went to Chris Martin (two) and Eric Budd. Ethan Hunsinger went all the way in goal. 

NORTHVILLE 6, CANTON 1: Noah Eckerle and Brendan Lovett each tallied a pair of goals as the Mustangs (8-4, 4-2 KLAA Gold) scored three unanswered goals in the final period to earn the crossover win Jan. 10 over the host Chiefs (3-9-1, 0-6 KLAA Black) at Arctic Edge.

Nick Bogenhagen chipped in with a goal and assist, while Balok also had a goal as Northville outshot Canton 37-19. Other assists went to Liam Cooney (two), Cole Smith, Jack Sargent, Jimmy Dales, Anthony Salamone and Sanuda Gunaratne.

Northville goalie Owen Moruzi made 18 saves. He gave up a first-period goal to Sam Reinders (assisted by Alex Poe and Hugo Fonovic).

HOWELL 4, NORTHVILLE 3: On Jan. 9, goalie Calvin Kantola made 31 saves as the host Highlanders (5-7, 3-2) thwarted the state-ranked Mustangs (7-4, 3-2) in a KLAA Gold Division game at Grand Oaks Arena.

Josh Farr, Billy Eskola and Nolan Smith each recorded a goal and assist for Howell, while Wes Smith tallied the other goal.

Tyler Balok and Jack Sargent each had a goal and assist to lead Northville, which trailed 3-1 after two periods. Alex Garbacik also tallied a goal, while Nick Williams and Anthony Salamone each collected an assists.

Northville used two goalies with Owen Moruzi making 9-of-10 saves, while Nate Williams was 6-of-9.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

NORTHVILLE 144.175-LIVONIA BLUE 144.150: Junior Mackenzie Willson posted a personal best on the balance Jan. 15 as the Mustangs continued their unbeaten streak with a victory over host Livonia Blue in a meet at Livonia Churchill H.S.

Maddy Lewis added 9.35, while captain Erin McCallum posted a 9.4 on vault for Northville.

NORTHVILLE TRIUMPHS: On Jan. 11, the Mustangs scored a season-best team score of 143.25 to beat host Howell and Brighton in a KLAA tri-meet at High Flyers Gymnastics as senior Erin McCallum was the top all-around scoring a 9.55 on vault and a 9.475 on floor exercise.

Junior Mackenzie Willson posted a personal best 9.65 on the balance, while freshman Sarah Gallagher added a 9.2 on vault.

Northville returns to action to face Livonia Blue beginning at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 at Livonia Churchill.

GIRLS BOWLING

NOVI 26, NORTHVILLE 4: Carrington Beaman led the way with a 161-201 two-game set as the Wildcats defeated their rival Mustangs in a KLAA Gold Division match Jan. 9 at Novi Bowl.

Other top scorers for Novi included Allison Prahin (175-154) and Angelina Chiu (170-136). The Wildcats won both Baker games, 156-131 and 159-156, along with both regular games, 726-646 and 721-603.

BOYS BOWLING

NORTHVILLE 21, NOVI 9: In a KLAA Gold Division match Jan. 9 at Novi Bowl, the Mustangs won both regular games, 938-900 and 970-909, to beat rival Novi, which was led by Jacob Kilikevicius (182-210), Peter Koomen (210-166) and Paulo Burgess (199-168).

Novi captured the first Baker game, 199-168, but Northville took the second, 174-126.
