DHAKA: Noted singer Shammi Akhter died on Tuesday (January 16) after battling cancer for a long time. 

She was 62. 

The veteran playback singer fell sick in the afternoon and breathed her last on way to hospital, said a source close to her. Her body is kept at her home in city’s Shantinagar area.

Shammi Akhter had been suffering from breast cancer for the past five years and underwent treatment at a Dhanmondi hospital. Recently, she returned home from the hospital. 

Shammi Akhtar’s first playback was in 1980 for the movie ‘Oshikkhito’. She also rendered voice for radio back in 1970. Some of her popular songs include ‘Dhaka Shoro Aisha Amar Asha Phuraise’, ‘Bhalobasleo Sobar Sathe Ghor Bandha Jay na’, ‘Ami Jemon Acchi Temon Robo, Bou Hobo Na Re’.

She also received National Film Award for the song ‘Bhalobasleo Sobar Sathe Ghor Bandha Jay na’ used in a movie, directed by Zakir Hossain Razu.
