President stresses for enhancing availability of medical professionals

Our Correspondent / NEW DELHI

President Ram Nath Kovind today stresses on the need for enhancing the availability of medical professionals in the country. Addressing the 45th Convocation Ceremony of AIIMS in New Delhi, Mr Kovind said, the workload on doctors is very high.

Expressing concern over the lack of Under Graduate and Post Graduate seats in medical courses in government and private medical colleges, the President called for overcoming the regulatory bottleneck in this regard. He said, there is a need to create more opportunities for those who want to pursue medical education as career.

Mr Kovind said, the use of new technology and adoption of telemedicine for diagnosis of diseases will go a long way in taking health care to those who need it most.

Speaking on the occasion, Health Minister JP Nadda said, the government is setting up AIIMS in different parts of the country to strengthen the health care system. He said existing medical colleges are also being upgraded.

Mr Nadda said, the pace of immunisation work is growing at a rate of 5 to 7 percent which was earlier 1 percent only. He said, under Mission Indradhanush, over 3 crore beneficiaries have been immunized since its launch.

The Health Minister said, there are 67,000 MBBS and 31,000 PG seats in government and private medical colleges for 1.3 billion population which is not adequate to provide health care to all.
