CHITTAGONG: Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has received an honorary Doctor of Letters (D. Litt) degree from Chittagong University (CU).
CU vice-chancellor Dr. Iftekharuddin Chowdhury handed over the D. Litt degree, crest, scarf and portrait in a special convocation ceremony on campus Tuesday (Tuesday 17).
Pranab Mukherjee said, “I am grateful to Chittagong University. I am overwhelmed feeling honor and dignity as you have awarded D. Litt degree to an ordinary man like me.”
CU vice-chancellor said, “Leader of the nonviolent movement Mahatma Gandhi said- Chittagong is everywhere. Revolutionaries like Mastarda Surya Sen and Pritilata Weddedar’s Chittagong is a pioneer in every matter. Pranab Mukherjee, a patron of politics, development and culture, is a true friend of Bangladesh. A golden chapter of Chittagong University has begun by giving the D. Litt degree to such a personality like him.”
Earlier, the former Indian president reached Chittagong this morning
Pranab also visited ancestral home of Masterda Surya Sen, an influential leader of Indian independence movement against British rule, at village Noapara under Raozan upazila in Chittagong.
Pranab Mukherjee served as the 13th president of India. He is scheduled to meet President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday evening.
Pranab arrived in Dhaka on Sunday on a private visit. He will leave for India on Thursday morning.
