Stranded motorist found on rural ND road with 'extreme hypothermia'
A windbreak stands against the February sky. JOHN STENNESCOLFAX, N.D. — A man was found near here suffering from "extreme hypothermia" Tuesday morning, Jan. 16, after apparently walking about 6 miles from his vehicle that was stuck in a ditch, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a person lying on the road shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday on County Road 3 a half mile north of County Road 4, which is about 6 miles west of Colfax.
Authorities believe Daniel Paul Haverland, 51, of rural Walcott, had walked to that location from about 6 miles away, where his vehicle was found stuck in a ditch near North Dakota Highway 18 and County Road 4. He was found on the road by family, the sheriff's office said.
Emergency workers treated Haverland at the scene before he was flown to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, with what authorities called "extreme hypothermia."
His condition wasn't known Tuesday afternoon, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
