WATCH: Heart-stopping moment hero firefighter catches falling baby from burning building

A FIREFIGHTER'S helmet camera has captured the dramatic moment a fellow officer caught a baby dropped from a blazing apartment building.

In the video the brave firefighter catches the infant after they were dropped by a panicked parent who was climbing down a ladder from the third floor balcony.

Around a dozen people were injured in the blaze at the building in DeKalb County, near the US city of Atlanta, Georgia.

Firefighters who arrived at the scene witnessed pure panic as debree from the burning building rained down on them.

While the emergency services were able to get ladders up to the higher floors, many parents feared their children wouldn't be able to escape in time and began throwing them down to waiting officers.

The heroic officer who caught the young child was Captain Scott Stroup, a third-generation firefighter.

In the clip, Stroup catches the crying baby in his arms, running away from the inferno before collapsing onto his knees.

He also caught a second older sibling just centimetres from the ground.

And Stroup wasn't the only officer who saved young children on the night of the fire on January 3.

MIRACLE: No one was killed in the blaze in Dekalb County, east of the US city of Atlanta, GA

No one was killed in the blaze, but many residents were treated for smoke inhalation injuries and one person suffered second-degree burns.

It still isn't known what caused the fire.

This was the moment a major New York airport had to be evacuated recently after an explosive blaze.
