"In 2017, Rs 81 crore worth liquor was sold during Bhogi and Rs 123 crore worth liquor on Pongal. This time, Rs 92 crore was the revenue on Bhogi and Rs 127 crore on Pongal," they said.
Sources however pointed out that the rates of liquor brands are approximately 10 per cent higher this year, when compared to Pongal 2017.
"Monday was holiday to TASMAC shops due to Thiruvalluvar Day. The outlets are open today on Kaanum Pongal, the last day of Pongal holidays. Sales are expected to be higher today too," they said.
The good revenue is being seen as a fillip to the cash-starved state government. And this has come days after bar owners in the state recently threatened to shut their outlets, protesting 'high deposit rates' collected from them.
TASMAC is the biggest revenue provider to the Tamil Nadu government and the money earned by it is being used to implement various social welfare schemes.
